Print Ready PDF

Cyrious Online will produce to-scale, high resolution PDFs that (in the majority of cases) can be sent straight to your printer. For example, if your customer orders a 22“x28” print of a menu board they have customized, your employees can download a PDF of the artwork that is sized to be 22“ x 28” at 600 dpi. Cyrious online supports standard web colors, Pantone colors, and custom colors you define through its Color Management System.

When you create an artwork template for an order, you can upload high-resolution images (usually an EPS file) and vector art work necessary for printing at the final size. For speed of use over the Internet, Cyrious Online will automatically convert these high-resolution images into lower-resolution PNG files for use in the on-screen designer. When the final PDF is produced, however, Cyrious Online retrieves the original artwork and uses it in the PDF. Since all of the built-in design elements in Cyrious Online (e.g., Text, Shapes, Stock Artwork) are vector based, they can scale to any size without pixelation or loss of fidelity.

Accessing the final PDF is as easy as pulling up the order. One way (there are many) is to

  1. Click on Orders on the toolbar. orders_icon.png_width70
  2. Find the order. You can enter the order number in the search bar or scroll to find it.
  3. Click the Order Number link to open it.
  4. Find the line item - expand it if necessary by clicking the down-arrow next to the line.
  5. Click the “Get Print Ready PDF” button to download the file.

Adobe Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF file editor. The only PDF files that Illustrator can accurately and fully edit are Illustrator files saved as PDF with the “Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities” option and for which fonts used in the original Illustrator document are installed. Instead of opening PDFs in Illustrator, we recommend 'linking' proof PDFs into an Illustrator document, and 'flattening' it if you require editing it within Illustrator.

To 'link' proof PDFs in Adobe Illustrator:

  1. File > New
  2. Specify the size of the artwork
  3. File > Place > select the proof PDF
  4. Now you have the PDF 'linked' into the document. See Adobe's documentation to read more about linked PDFs.
  5. 'Embedding' the PDF, may cause issues with text

To 'flatten' linked proof PDFs into vectors:

  1. Select the linked PDF, and go to Object > Flatten Transparency
  2. Check the “Convert All Text to Outlines” box. Here is also a good place to change any resolutions.
  3. Hit OK, and you're good! You now have lots of vectors to play with.

One of the challenges Cyrious Online can help you with is ensuring that customer uploaded artwork is of sufficient resolution for the output prints. Any time the user uploads a file, the resolution of that file is checked against the output size of the print. Based on the resolution and the settings you choose, you can:

  • Prevent the user from using the file
  • Warn the user, and require her or him to initial they are aware of the challenges.
  • Place the order on hold pending future Artwork Approval.
